43 Things I’ve Learned in 43 Years by Secrets of Supermom Lori Oberbroeckling

If you are listening live as this podcast episode airs, today is my birthday! And in celebration of this 43rd trip around the sun, I am sharing 43 things I have learned in my 43 years on this planet.

Ready for all 43? Here we go!

  1. No one is going to force you to take time for yourself, You have to take it consistently, deliberately, and without residual guilt. And, wow does this take practice.
  2. Nothing lasts forever. Everything has its own beautiful, painful, glorious, or chaotic season.
  3. Weekly planning will change your life.
  4. Coffee is always better when someone else pours your cup.
  5. Our family thrives on adventure so we must get out together (ideally traveling somewhere away from our home!).
  6. Marriage is harder than I ever thought it would be.
  7. Everyone is replaceable in business, even those of us absolutely killing it in our jobs. Even us.
  8. Most things are not that big of a deal, and we let these things have way too much mental, physical, and emotional space in our lives.
  9. People are doing the best they can. We all have differing capacities.
  10. Burgers without buns are actually better.
  11. Nobody cares as much about your body as you do.
  12. Parenting requires way more interaction with boogers than I ever thought possible.
  13. Grudges will suck all the good from your soul. Let it go.
  14. Not everyone will like you, and that says nothing about you.
  15. Being the best and being the best YOU are sometimes the same and sometimes wildly different. And that is okay.
  16. Chocolate chip cookie dough remains the best ice cream and can make anything better.
  17. Sugar crashes suck productivity and motivation. Sadly.
  18. Lifting heavy stuff doesn’t just make you physically stronger–it makes you mentally stronger, too.
  19. Even if you don’t need a lot of sleep, you still need some sleep.
  20. It is okay to ask for help, even often welcomed. Get out of your own way.
  21. I can literally do anything I put my mind to do.
  22. When you get people to talk about themselves, they end up liking you even more.
  23. One hour of complete focus can change your entire day.
  24. Old friends are the best friends.
  25. Laughing until you feel like you might pee your pants is the best kind of connection.
  26. If you’re going to hug, big hugs only. Shake hands and hug people like you mean it.
  27. Everyone has the capacity for change no matter what past or current circumstances might plague you. Everyone.
  28. Beer and sparking water is best in a bottle.
  29. Voice texts are the savior of busy friends.
  30. Halloween is way more fun with a family costume.
  31. When you train your dogs that you are the keeper of the treats, they will ask you all day long for said treats.
  32. Pets die too soon and are always worth having.
  33. Car rides are the best time for deep conversation–kids and adults alike.
  34. You don’t have to prove you are amazing and successful to BE amazing and successful.
  35. Your energy is contagious. Choose wisely how you’d like to infect people.
  36. Gifts of experiences are always better.
  37. Just because you’ve always done it, doesnt mean you always have to do it. Any day is a good day to start new.
  38. Sock and phone charger gremlins are real. One day we will find their lair.
  39. Relationships with people in your life will always be the most important thing.
  40. Getting older means caring less about what other people think about you and more about what you think of yourself. I can’t imagine how much I won’t care about at 93.
  41. Everyone loves bubbles
  42. Attending a movie without popcorn automatically makes said movie less good.
  43. Becoming the best, most joyous version of yourself spills over into everyone in your life. You are worth the time and the effort.
